Plumbing for a cause
Meet “South Africa’s best plumber”, this is how Willem Kok describes himself. His years of experience working both the local and international services and repairs markets make him the closest thing to the best. Willem is not your regular services and repairs guy either, he has plans and a desire to use his skills to do good in the world. Willem sees himself playing bigger roles in South Africa than that of an Entrepreneur and Innovator.
The skills that he has collected from his wealth of experience include electrical, painting, tiling, building and generally “making something out of nothing” to name a few. He hopes to use these skills to do more for the world than just fixing things. “My personal motivation is to make a difference and to use the gift that God gave to me to help others and to be a leader and an example to others” says Willem.
Willem is a South African native who grew up in a small town called Kroonstad in the Free State Province. He describes his upbringing as a challenging one. He was raised by a mother that worked for the Government as a Social Worker and a father that he says was mostly absent from their home. He recounts how during his high school years he had to find odd jobs to bring in money in to his home for his school fees and other household needs.
It is this pain from his childhood that motivates him to want to be a better family man and do right by his fellow South Africans. “I would like to bring my family back together and be there for them. Money can’t buy happiness and love” says Willem. He says he hopes for God to guide him to be a better father, “I pray that God will teach and guide to be a husband and a father for my family that He is proud of.”
Although he had already started working, Willem’s entrance in to the repairs market saw him begin with an apprenticeship as a plumber in 2002. He qualified in Plumbing from Olifantsfontein in 2007. He then spent four years working in New Zealand and Australia as a plumber before relocating back to South Africa 2012. While abroad, Willem worked for various services and repairs companies where he honed his plumbing skill.
Living abroad gave Willem an appreciation for services and products sector that our hardware market does not have. It also gave him a window in to the mind-set that corporations in other countries have versus the mind-set of companies here at home. “The mind-set overseas is just different from South Africa. The companies there want to make life easier for their clients, while companies here want to profit from the needs of the client.”
His desire to change the South African mind-set is what inspired Willem to start his own company and invent products. Willem is currently the CEO and Owner at a corporation that houses three companies, namely King’s Plumbing, WillemKok Manufacturing and Mr. Kok. Although owned by one person the companies serve different functions but with the same vision, which is to save the client money.
King’s Plumbing is a national Services and Repair Plumbing company, with reach across Africa. The company is centred on Willem’s collection of knowledge and expertise working in South Africa and abroad. This makes them kings in the plumbing industry. They bring innovating solutions to clients in both commercial and residential spaces. No job is too big or too small. King’s Plumbing’s quality assurance is their lifetime workmanship guarantee.
Another company under Willem’s corporation is Mr Kok, an online store (mrkok.co.za) an online store that gives shoppers access to products that are not currently available in South Africa. Some of the innovative products on the catalogues are manufactured by Willem’s manufacturing company Willemkok. Here shoppers will buy products such as Willem’s paint lid; a paint securing lid that will help shoppers store in-use paint.
The manufacturing company Willemkok prides itself in manufactures products that are used in the repairs sector, chief among the products they create is the Willemkok Geyser. An invention that will save clients’ money by guaranteeing a 50 Year warranty, the biggest in the geyser manufacturing market. The aim is so that consumers will never have to replace their geysers.
Although an impressive Entrepreneur with a sharp business mind, Willem wants to utilize his skills for the benefit of the community around him. “I see myself in schools and communities talking about my childhood and the way I grew up and motivate others to never give up and put their trust in God and not in people, to put God in people.” Willem also believes he has a part to play in changing the socio-economic conditions in South Africa, “I would like to change South Africa so that we are all seen equal and not judged by the colour of our skin, create work and support the community now more than ever because people are losing their jobs because of COVID-19 disaster.”
“I want us as a nation to embrace each other’s differences.” Willem concludes.
